Year 11:

  • Get used to the demands and standards of senior schooling
  • Develop a balanced approach to life
  • Take opportunities for industry placement / work experience
  • Talk and listen  to people about the jobs they do
  • Read the Saturday employment section of Bulletin
  • Develop an understanding of the general direction you may want to head. It is probably linked to the subjects you enjoy and do well at.
  • Study very, very, very hard.

 

Year 12:

Term One:

  • Focus on subjects – remember you increase your options for after school depending on what you do at school.
  • Try and achieve a balance between school, home, sport, work and play. Remember though, your full time job this year is school.
  • Keep on top of your studies
  • Fine tune your general career/course aspirations i.e. what general areas / industries are you interested in
  • Start talking seriously to people / gathering information
  • If entering workforce, do industry placement and holiday work experience
  • Folio people… start compiling folios

 

Term Two:

  • Prepare for major exam block
  • Keep on top of your studies
  • Keep up industry placement and holiday work experience if entering workforce
  • Look at TAFE ‘short’ courses to add to your CV if entering workforce
  • Narrow your general career interests to a series of possible courses / jobs
  • Review “THE END” – the fortnightly e-newsletter generated by your Careers Advisor. Some Apprenticeship applications need to start mid-year!

 

Term Three:

  • JCU Experience Day – All OP Students to attend.
  • Attend university and TAFE open days
  • Attend Careers EXPO
  • Attend school career information sessions
  • Study your QTAC guide
  • Talk seriously and gain advice from people
  • Review and update CV
  • If entering workforce, start scouring the papers and writing/visiting employers
  • Decide on your six QTAC preferences
  • Apply for special consideration to QTAC if required
  • Keep on top of your studies
  • Do QCS
  • Keep an eye on THE END  e-newsletter
  • Consider registering your interest with TORGAS or SKILLS 360

 

Term Four:

  • Make changes to QTAC preferences
  • Keep an eye on THE END  e-newsletter
  • Intensify job searching – if you leave it until the end of the year it is too late
  • Keep on top of your studies
  • Consider back up plans – talk to Careers Counsellor about these.
  • Celebrate the end of school – wait for results – wait for offers

 

 

REMEMBER: Your school results are about giving yourself options when you finish school. Your OP score does not measure success, but rather that you obtain entry to the course. Also, if you don’t get your first preference, it does not mean that you have failed. Talk to your Careers Advisor about alternative ideas and tactics.
